June 26 2008   CORRADO IN PW
Umm ... Drop
Corrado
by Doug Wallen
Corrado are intent to keep their mission simple, as their MySpace page suggests: “We write songs and play them. No alienating hipster stuff.” That may read somewhat like a personals ad—“No head games”—but when Animal Collective can headline the Electric Factory, can you blame Corrado for clarifying their stance ahead of time? Having grown up together in Cape May County, N.J., these Philly transplants proudly adopted the surname shared by three of them—fraternal twins John (bass) and Tony (drums) Corrado and their cousin Steve Corrado (rhythm guitar), who recruited mutual friend Mike Flanigan (lead guitar)—to adorn their long-gestating musical collaboration. It’s also the title of the quartet’s new self-released album. True to their word, Corrado don’t retreat into tricky indie-style terrain, but their songs are more surprising than those of many homegrown rock bands. Maybe it’s because each member at some point sings lead except Tony, who sings backup. Maybe it’s the fact that Flanigan is self-taught, lending a certain looseness to his serpentine leads. Or maybe it’s just the combination of younger guys and what sound like older influences, namely the Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd. At times gangly and goofy and at other times steeped in shadows, Corrado slip leisurely through their debut. “Partying” makes the most of its rickety twang, “Minor Key” finds a dance-y pulse beneath urgent lyrics, and “Papi-San” provides a jaunty diversion. The finish comes with “Keep It Moving (Sharks),” a song that vibes like the Animals classic “House of the Rising Sun.” Mentions of blood and infested waters, not to mention some well-placed reverb, spells a downcast turn for an often fun, ramshackle record. Even when testing their range, though, Corrado remain accessible and earnest, just the way they intended all along.
